Hi, I'm Iva!
When you encounter resistance, that is a sign that you are on the right track! Many times when we want to make changes, break an old habit, or try something new, we experience resistance.
Let’s dive into some brain science on what is going on in our brain when this resistance comes up for us.
Our brain is simply trying to keep us safe. The brain was created to protect us from harm, and when it perceives a threat or danger, it activates a response to protect us. This response is commonly known as the “fight or flight” response.
The amygdala, a part of the brain responsible for emotional processing, plays a crucial role in triggering this response. When the amygdala detects a potential threat, it sends a signal to the hypothalamus, which in turn activates the sympathetic nervous system. This leads to the release of adrenaline and other stress hormones, which prepare the body for action.
In these situations where we experience resistance, the brain may perceive this as a threat to our safety. This can lead to feelings of anxiety, fear, or discomfort.
However, it is important to note that the brain’s response to resistance is not always beneficial. In some cases, the brain’s attempts to keep us safe can actually hold us back from achieving our goals or reaching our full potential. Therefore, it is important to learn how to manage and overcome resistance, rather than giving in to it.
Just recently I came through some pretty severe resistance and here are three things that helped me navigate through the it and on to the other side:
Self care
When we face resistance in our lives, it’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of trying to push through. But sometimes, what we really need is to slow down and take a moment to care for ourselves. Self-care isn’t just a buzzword – it’s a way to nurture our bodies, minds, and spirits so that we can be the best versions of ourselves.
Think about it – when was the last time you truly took care of yourself? Maybe it’s been a while since you’ve had a good night’s sleep or taken a break from your work. Perhaps you’ve been neglecting your physical health or emotional well-being. It’s okay – we’ve all been there.
But it’s time to give yourself permission to take a step back and focus on your own needs. Take a deep breath and let yourself relax. Treat yourself to some quality time with loved ones, a warm bath, or a good book. Take a leisurely stroll in the park or spend some time journaling to clear your mind.
Remember, self-care isn’t selfish. It’s a vital part of our well-being that allows us to recharge and renew ourselves. By taking care of ourselves, we are better equipped to face the challenges of life and overcome any resistance that comes our way. So go ahead, be kind to yourself today. You deserve it.
Reach out to your inner circle
Picture this – you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, and unsure of how to move forward. You could try to push through on your own, but why go it alone when you have an amazing inner circle of people who love and support you?
These could be close friends, family members, mentors, a therapist, or a coach – anyone who has your best interests at heart and wants to see you succeed.
When you reach out to your inner circle, you’re not just asking for help – you’re tapping into a wealth of knowledge, experience, and compassion. They can offer fresh perspectives, hold you accountable, and encourage you to push past your limits and strive for greatness.
Plus, let’s be real – life can be tough sometimes, and it’s okay to ask for help. Your inner circle can provide a safe space to share your thoughts and feelings without judgment, and can help you manage stress and anxiety so that you can stay focused and energized.
So, don’t be afraid to reach out to your inner circle when you hit resistance. They are there to support you, pray with you, and ask the hard questions that need to be asked.
Know your why
You know that feeling when you’re on a road trip, and you see a sign for your destination? Suddenly, everything clicks into place, and you know exactly where you’re going and why. Well, knowing your why is like having that signpost for life.
When you’re crystal clear on your why, it’s like having a beacon of light that guides you towards your goals, no matter what.
Think of your why as your secret weapon – the thing that helps you stay focused, overcome obstacles, and achieve your dreams. It’s the reason why you get up in the morning, the passion that fuels your soul, and the purpose that gives your life meaning.
When you know your why, you have a sense of clarity and direction that makes decision-making so much easier. You can filter out the noise and distractions of life and focus on what truly matters – your goals and aspirations.
So, take some time to reflect on your why. What drives you? What makes your heart sing? What is the purpose that God placed you on this planet for?
Whatever it is, being really clear on your why is powerful in helping you push through the resistance.
