Goal Setting
Just an Iowa girl following the dreams that God put in my heart. I am wife to Levi and mom to Austin, Lucas and Ethan. Read my story...
Hi, I'm Iva!
Confession time!
For years I have loved goal setting. I have always had goals and been fairly consistent about accomplishing them. But one thing that I was not very good at, was writing them down. GASP!
I would set goals in my head, but I wouldn’t write them down because then that would mean if I failed to reach my goals, I would see it on paper. And that just felt downright scary! But, I also realized that most successful people were intentional about writing down their goals and so I thought I why not? Why not test it out and see if I could get even better with reaching my goals if I wrote them down.
This year, I committed to purchasing a goal setting planner, setting long term goals and breaking them down into smaller action steps and seeing how it goes. So far, I feel way more productive and I have accomplished more than I thought I would. YAY!!
Here are 5 tips that have helped me be consistent with goal setting and accomplishing my goals over the years, (even when I wasn’t writing them down:)
Know your why
If you don’t have a clear why for a specific goal that you have set, when you lose motivation it will be much easier for you to quit.
Be specific
Make a clear goal that states the specific thing you want to accomplish and the date you want to have it done by. Instead of saying I want to lose weight, say I want to lose 5 pounds by May 1st.
Be flexible
As much as anyone I like to see my goals accomplished, but always remember they are there to serve us and we are not a slave to them. Realizing that I can be flexible with my goals has brought me so much freedom!
Have someone hold you accountable
This is huge!! If you set a goal and tell no one, it is so much easier to not accomplish it. You can ditch it and no one will know. When you ask someone to hold you accountable it makes it is much more likely that you will follow through with your goals. Ask your spouse, a friend, or a mentor to hold you accountable.
Celebrate your progress
When you reach your goal CELEBRATE!! This is so key to staying motivated. Determine when you set the goal what you will do to celebrate, and then you have something to look forward to.
